The OBA Pathway from AP-M
Internationally qualified nurses (IQNS) are required to register in Australia as an RN. IQN’s who are assessed as holding a qualification that is relevant but not substantially equivalent to the Australian approved qualification will be required to undergo multiple-choice question (MCQ) and Objective Structured Clinical Examination (OSCE).
Outcome based Assessment, Next Generation NCLEX (NGN) and OSCE are mandatory programs to be completed either online or in a registered RTO in Australia.
The OBA self-check is FREE!
If you are an internationally qualified nurse or midwife (IQNM) who wishes to register in Australia, you will need to complete the Self-check before applying for registration. It is important to read all the information on this page before starting the Self-check.
Once you have read this information, there is a link to the Self-check available on this page in the section ‘Ready to complete the Self-check?’

National Council Licensure Examination (NCLEX-RN)
What is Next Generation NCLEX (NGN)?
The National Council Licensure Examination for Registered Nurses (NGN) is a standardized test that the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA) has introduced to determine if a candidate is ready to be licensed as an entry-level nurse in Australia.
The National Council Licensure Examination (NGN) was developed by the National Council of State Boards of Nursing. This is a prerequisite examination for graduate nurses in the United States and Canada. In early 2020, Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA) adapted this concept for their new program named Outcome Based Assessment (OBA) for Stream B candidates.
The OBA was established as a consistent approach for Internationally Qualified Nurses (IQN) across the globe. This assessment is divided into two categories: MCQ/NGN and OSCE as preparatory exams before they begin to practice as entry-level nurses.
Next Generation NCLEX (NGN) has four major categories and eight subcategories that measures a candidate’s minimum competency needed to provide safe and effective nursing care to clients. It is also a Computer Adaptive Test (CAT) that allows a student to get easy to hard level questions depending on one’s response to the previous one. The computer will stop giving questions once it has determined a student’s level of competence.
If a student has previously passed the Next Generation NCLEX (NGN) from the US and Canada, score transfer can be done if it is within the 10 years validity period. Next Generation NCLEX (NGN) can be taken in any country that administers the exam.
Once Next Generation NCLEX (NGN) has been cleared, a student automatically proceeds to the OSCE stage, which is a practical examination that is taken in Adelaide, Australia.
Further to the above, using our new RTO partner who specializes in pre OSCE test training and if required, NCLEX test training you will increase your chances of passing first time and saving thousands of dollars. Just contact us HERE
